Over the past decade ther has been a notable increase in natural disaster as a result of factors such as climate change, environmental degradation
and the increasing human population on the planet. Consequently, for the sustinance and monitoring of the planet and the human population, the need for
disaster prediction, monitoring and tracking is required in order to provide aid to affected lives, rehabilitation programmes and contigency planning.
To fascilitate this, a system for recording natural disasters timely as well as keeping a record of disasters is required.
DISTA is a system developed
by The South African Space Agency in collaboration with The National Disaster Management Center. The interactive maps allows for disaster tracking and monitoring
as well as quantifying extent of the damage. Various Maps with locations are shown on the base map. Clicking on an area allows for the retrival of disaster information
for an area including viewing the maps of the affected areas.
